ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — CSP’s feature “Crisis in the C-Store,” about how the opioid crisis has hit home for convenience-store chains across the country, took top honors at the recent national Azbee Awards. The story also was honored earlier this year at the Jesse H. Neal Awards for Best Single Article.

The May 2018 cover article, by Alaina Lancaster, Greg Lindenberg and Samantha Oller, won a national gold award for News Analysis at the awards dinner, along with a gold award in the same category in the organization’s Upper Midwest regional awards. The article examined what c-store retailers are doing to address the crisis at the store level and featured insights from experts on how to deal with employees who may be struggling with addiction.

“The opioid crisis has been weighing on retailers for years and generally was swept under the rug,” said Steve Holtz, content director of the convenience group for CSP parent company Winsight. “We were anxious to get at the center of the subject, and we’re grateful for those who were willing to share their stories with us. This is a great example of the kind of journalism we plan to attack at CSP going forward.”

Also recognized with a gold award for Individual Profile was Angel Abcede’s in-depth article about Kum & Go Chairman Kyle Krause, CSP’s 2018 Retail Leader of the Year. The story won a gold award in the same category at the regional awards.

Honored multiple times over its more than 15-year run, CSP’s Category Management Handbooktook gold in the category of Special Supplement at the national and the regional level for its 2018 edition.

The magazine also was awarded silver for Infographics at the national awards for overall design excellence, plus a bronze in the same category at the regional ceremony.

In the category of Single Topic Coverage by a Team, CSP’s editors were awarded a national bronze award for their coverage of disruption and next-generation retail. The team also won a regional silver award in this category.

CSP and its designers, Bruce Ramsay, Nico Heins and Johnathan Shelton, also were recognized with silver in the design category of Opening Page/Spread at the Azbee regional awards for the magazine’s Road to Fortune series.

The Azbee Awards are presented annually by ASBPE, the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors and designers employed in the business, trade, and specialty press. It is based in Wheaton, Ill.
