Valero Tops Best Big Employers List

Pantry makes Fortune 500 for first time

SAN ANTONIO -- Valero Energy Corp. said that Fortune magazine has ranked Valero No. 1 on its new Best Big Companies to Work For list. This year, Valero ranked No. 16 on the Fortune 500 main list and ranked No. 22 among the 100 Best Companies to Work For. Valero was the only refining company to make the new list.

Being named America's best big company is particularly exciting and a true testament to our employees' hard work and dedication, said Bill Klesse, Valero's chairman and CEO. The ranking highlights Valero's commitment to a safe workplace, which [image-nocss] from the beginning has been a core value for our company.

Valero has earned a number of industry awards over the years, including spots on Forbes' Platinum 400 Best Big Companies list, the BusinessWeek 50 and BusinessWeek Best Performing Companies lists, among others.

San Antonio-based Valero, with approximately 22,000 employees and annual revenues of more than $90 billion, owns and operates 18 refineries throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.3 million barrels per day, making it the largest refiner in North America. Valero is also one of the nation's largest retail operators, with more than 5,500 retail and branded wholesale outlets in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean under brand names including Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. beat out ExxonMobil for the top spot on this year's Fortune 500 listing. Chevron and ConocoPhillips took the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Other relevant entrants, along with Valero at No. 16, included Marathon at No. 30, Sunoco at No. 60, Hess at No. 75, Tesoro at No. 128 andfor the first timeThe Pantry at No. 436, thee only convenience store chain to make the list.
