A 75-year-old, privately held company with a dairy background, Cumberland Farms has more than 500 stores stretching along the Eastern Seaboard.
New stores, including four opened in Central Florida in fall 2015, feature the chain’s focus on made-to-order foodservice and technology. The new concept’s stylish look includes concrete floors, wide aisles and shorter merchandising shelves. There is ample space for foodservice, with digital signage and touch-screen kiosks for custom sandwiches and coffee.
Its former sister company, Gulf Oil, distributes motor fuels and has 12 proprietary oil terminals and a network of more than 75 other supply terminals. In June 2015, Boston-based private-equity firm ArcLight Capital Partners announced plans to acquire Gulf Oil from the Haseotes family. The deal closed in late December, returning to Gulf a figure largely credited with reviving the brand over the past dozen years. According to sources, Joe Petrowski is partnering with ArcLight, which has helped spur master limited partnerships (MLPs) in crude oil and natural gas.
