Stewart’s Shops is an employee- and family-owned convenience-store chain based in the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., area. It is known for milk, ice cream, coffee, food to go, gasoline and more. There are now 332 Stewart’s Shops located in more than 30 counties across upstate New York. Ten outlets are in southern Vermont. Two new stores opened in 2015, along with 10 rebuilds and dozens of additions and remodels, as Stewart’s Shops improves traffic flow and expands its foodservice with “Easy Food” available morning, noon and night. A number of projects are on the schedule for 2016, including rebuilding the company’s very first shop located in Ballston Spa, N.Y.

The company traces its roots back to 1921, when Percy W. and Charles V. Dake began making Dake’s The company produces dairy products in its 35,000-square-foot manufacturing facility built in 1994 in Greenfield.

Stewart’s Shops offer fuel at 274 locations. One station has a car wash. The chain is unique in the number of products it produces in its own facilities, including 20-ounce “refresher” teas and dairy drinks such as eggnog, along with ice cream and milk, baked goods, breads, soups and chili.

The stores vary in size and layout, depending on when the shop was built or rebuilt, but all carry Stewart’s private-label products and offer an ice-cream counter.

The company owns a 227,000-square-foot distribution warehouse, the dairy and another 52,800-square-foot building that is “like an appliance store,” where equipment such as coffeemakers, microwaves and store fixtures are maintained, repaired and rotated to the stores. The company takes care of all the shops’ needs, even employee uniforms.
