California Almonds Says 'Nuts' to Afternoon Energy Crash

Bewitching hour is 2:58 p.m.

MODESTO, Calif.-- Where are you at 2:58 p.m.? Wherever you are, you're probably crashing.

According to a recent online study, more than half of American adults say they have an afternoon energy crash at least once a week, resulting in everything from naps to distractions, such as browsing social media and playing video games.

Retailers might consider this a late afternoon daypart to offer "energy crash" solutions, especially healthy snacks.

The online study was commissioned by California Almonds, the Almond Board of California, which then teamed up with a registered dietitian nutritionist to offer suggestions for combatting the afternoon energy dip. Naturally, a handful of almonds can help.

Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner also shared the following ways to "seize the afternoon":

  • Have a walking meeting.
  • Do some easy yoga stretches.
  • Grab a smart snack.

"No matter how busy you are or what your job entails, across the nation at about 2:58 p.m., people are facing the afternoon crash," Blatner said. "To combat the energy dip, I always recommend a smart and easy snack," such as nuts, she said. "Their fiber, protein and good fat can help anyone seize their afternoon."

The 6,490 adults in the study reported how they feel during the afternoon crash, with top responses including drowsy (66%), less productive (48%) and worn out (43%).

The study was conducted in fall 2016 using GfK's KnowledgePanel. GfK is a market research firm with U.S. offices around the country, including in New York.

Blatner is also a certified specialist in sports dietetics. She is the nutrition consultant for the 2016 World Series Champions the Chicago Cubs, a food and nutrition blogger with Huffington Post, and a nutrition expert on the advisory board of Shape magazine.

The Almond Board of California, based in Modesto, Calif., is a nonprofit organization that promotes almonds through its research-based approach to all aspects of marketing, farming and production on behalf of the more than 6,500 almond growers and processors in California.
