Buc-ee’s Breaks Ground on First Store in Virginia

Destination retailer also begins construction on third Georgia location

Buc-ee’s broke ground on a new travel center in Rockingham County, near Mount Crawford, Virginia, on Jan. 30. The store is the chain’s first location in the Old Dominion State. It also broke ground on a travel center in Brunswick, Georgia, its third location in the Peach State, on Jan. 29.

The Rockingham County location will occupy 74,000 square feet and offer 120 fueling positions. It will bring more than 200 full-time jobs to the area.

Glenn Youngkin, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony. “The story of Buc-ee’s is a story about understanding customers, about making sure that people who are traveling have something better than they’ve ever seen before, and it’s the story of understanding how to treat the people who work for you and with you. I’m so excited to be a part of this today, and we are so proud to have Buc-ee’s be a part of Virginia.”

Virginia Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III also attended the ceremony along with Rockingham County officials.

The Brunswick, Georgia, location will also occupy 74,000 square feet and offer 120 fueling positions. It will also bring more than 200 full-time jobs to the area.

Brunswick Mayor Cosby Johnson attended the ceremony along with other county and city officials.

The retailer's stores are famous for their clean restrooms. The stores also offers Buc-ee’s favorites including Texas barbeque, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, jerky and fresh pastries.

More Bang for Your Buc-ee’s

Since beginning its multi-state expansion in 2019, Buc-ee’s has opened travel centers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Buc-ee's broke ground in Amarillo, Texas, in October 2023, reported abc7 Amarillo, with a scheduled opening date of February 2025. It will occupy 74,000 square feet and have 120 fueling positions and 24 electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Buc-ee’s is poised to open its first location in Colorado, reported 9News. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2022, with an anticipated opening in spring 2024, according to the report. It is north of the Denver metropolitan area, in Johnstown, at the southwest corner of Interstate 25 and County Road 48, the report added.

The mega-store retailer announced a mass hiring event last month for the Colorado store, but it has not yet determined an opening date, a company spokesperson told CSP.

After pulling out of its plans to build in Efland, North Carolina, in 2021, Buc-ee’s received approval this January from the City of Mebane to build its first North Carolina location, reported chapelboro.com. The city council approved the group’s conditional zoning application, which will bring a 74,000-square-foot travel center and 120 gas pumps to 1425 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road.

Buc-ee’s is also eyeing a location for its first Arizona store, in Goodyear, according to a report by the City of Goodyear. The proposed location would be on the southeast corner of Bullard Avenue and Interstate 10. The Goodyear City Council approved rezoning the site.

Founded in 1982, Lake Jackson, Texas-based Buc-ee’s Ltd. has 47 locations, 34 in Texas, as well as 13 in other states. Since beginning its multi-state expansion in 2019, Buc-ee’s has opened travel centers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The Lake Jackson, Texas-based company is also headed West with groundbreakings in Colorado and Missouri.
