WASHINGTON -- Several leading companies in the convenience-retailing and oil-and-gas industries were recognized recently for earning high or improved scores in LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) workplace equality as the retail industry makes strides in this area, according to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index.
The report rates companies on their nondiscrimination policies, employment benefits, diversity and inclusion, public commitment to LGBTQ equality and responsible citizenship. Chevron Corp., BP America Inc. and Shell Oil Co. all earned the highest possible scores from the educational arm of the advocacy group.
Grocery and convenience-store chains that earned top marks include Wawa, Giant Eagle Inc., The Kroger Co., SpartanNash, Supervalu Inc., C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc., Ahold USA Inc. and Winn-Dixie Stores Inc.
“The top oil and gas companies in the Corporate Equality Index demonstrate a depth of investment in LGBTQ inclusion amongst a top tier of businesses, and the sector as a whole has made major improvements over the past year,” said Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, in a statement.
