Casey’s General Stores Inc. has begun to integrate 26 Minit Mart convenience stores in the Kansas City, Missouri, area that it acquired from EG Group in a sale reported earlier this year, CSP Daily News has confirmed.

In 2016, global c-store retailer EG Group acquired 225 Minit Mart locations from Westlake, Ohio-based TravelCenters of America for approximately $330.8 million, adding to its EG America portfolio that included former Kroger c-stores and the Cumberland Farms chain, among others. In 2022, the Blackburn, U.K.-based company began exploring the possible sale of its U.S. assets, and in March sold 26 non-core Minit Mart locations to an unnamed buyer for total gross proceeds of $48 million.

That buyer was Casey’s, Katie Petru, a spokesperson for Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey’s, told CSP. “We are still developing plans for these newly acquired locations. To date, we’ve been focused on the details of the acquisition, transition for team members and immediate operations,” she said.

She did not say whether the company has plans to rebrand the sites to Casey’s or its goodstop sub-brand.

Casey’s operates approximately 2,500 convenience stores in 16 states. It has 12 locations in the Kansas City metropolitan area and several more in suburban communities in the surrounding area.

“We continue to grow in both rural and mid-sized markets like Kansas City,” Petru said. “Other recent examples include growth in Omaha, Nebraska, Oklahoma City and Knoxville, Tennessee. We think our offering travels well to new communities and our guests love what Casey’s has to offer. We expect with these 26 locations we’ll be able to serve even more Casey’s fans in Kansas City.”

Casey’s closed on the acquisition of Omaha-Buchanan Energy and its 94 Bucky’s c-stores in May 2021, purchased 49 Circle K c-stores in Oklahoma from Alimentation Couche-Tard, Laval, Quebec, and 40 c-stores from Pilot, Knoxville.

  • Casey’s General Stores is No. 3 on CSP’s 2023 Top 202 ranking of U.S. c-store chains by store count. EG America is No. 5.

EG Group established itself in the United States in 2018 as EG America by acquiring Cincinnati-based Kroger’s 762-site c-store network. It acquired Minit Mart in 2018. And in 2019, among other acquisitions, EG Group acquired Cumberland Farms and its nearly 660 c-stores in the Northeast and Florida, and EG America now has its headquarters in Westborough, Massachusetts. With more than 1,750 sites across 33 states, U.S. c-store brands include Cumberland Farms, Certified OilFastrac, Kwik Shop, Loaf N’ Jug, Minit Mart, Quik Stop, Sprint Food StoresTom Thumb and Turkey Hill.
