New Convenience-Store Roundup for August 2023
By Greg Lindenberg on Sep. 20, 2023This edition of CSP’s New Convenience-Store Roundup features new-to-industry (NTI) c-store openings, as well as closings, that took place in August 2023.
Pennsylvania and Virginia had the most new stores for the month, with six and five, respectively. By company, Sheetz opened the most stores in the month, with 10 in four states; Wawa opened seven in three states.
The unscientifically gathered roundup—gleaned from company announcements, websites, email, social media and newspapers around the country, among other sources—is by no means complete, but it serves as a monthly competitive snapshot of newly opened or closed U.S. c-stores, gas stations, truckstops and travel centers.

Many of the stores listed here are owned by independent operators, while others belong to major chains. Some are part ofCSP’s Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by size. Some of the owners and operators are new entrepreneurs, and some are industry veterans.
Unless otherwise noted, these NTI locations offer the food, snacks, beverages, tobacco, merchandise, services and amenities found in most c-stores. Most offer fuel. ...
Alabama
QuikTrip opened a new travel center in Pell City, Alabama, on Aug. 17.

Colorado
Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a new location in Cañon City, Colorado, on Aug. 24. It has six diesel bays, CAT scale, 54 truck parking spaces, 70 car parking spaces and five RV parking spaces. In September, the company will open a Love’s RV Stop with 125 RV parking spaces and hookups on the site, as well as a dog park. The more than 13,000-square-foot facility features an Arby’s and bean-to-cup coffee. It also offers five showers, laundry and Love’s Mobile to Go Zone.

Wawa opened new c-stores in Hialeah, Florida, on Aug. 21 and Jacksonville, Florida, on Aug. 24 and Aug. 31.

Illinois
bp’s Thorntons opened a new c-store in Kildeer, Illinois, on Aug. 4. This new 6,000-square-foot facility is set on 5.15 acres and features self-checkout; LED lighting; freshly made burritos and sandwiches prepared throughout the day in the store’s onsite kitchen; beverages including fresh bean to cup coffee and ice-cold fountain beverages with nugget ice; and 18 auto fueling positions and three diesel lanes.

Martin & Bayley Inc. opened a new Hucks’ Food & Fuel location in Mayfield, Kentucky, on Aug. 24.

Louisiana
Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a new location in Opelousas, Louisiana, on Aug. 31. It has seven diesel bays, CAT scale, 64 truck parking spaces, 59 car parking spaces and seven RV parking spaces. The more than 17,000-square-foot facility features a Hardee’s and Godfather’s Pizza and bean-to-cup coffee. It also offers seven showers, laundry and Love’s Mobile to Go Zone, as well as a Speedco.

Nebraska
Wilkinson Development opened Fat Dog’s Travel Center, located north of I-80 Exit 237 in Lexington, Nebraska, on Aug. 23. The store features a c-store, a quick-service restaurant (QSR), a truckers’ lounge, shower facilities and more. Wilkinson Development also opened a new Time Saver c-store, Time Saver South, in North Platte, Nebraska, on Aug. 30.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a new location in Tonopah, Nevada, on Aug. 17. It has seven diesel bays, CAT scale, 40 truck parking spaces, 58 car parking spaces and five RV parking spaces. The more than 9,000-square-foot facility features Chester’s Chicken and Godfather’s Pizza and bean-to-cup coffee. It also four eight showers and a laundry. Love’s also opened a new location in Jackpot, Nevada, on Aug. 31. It has five diesel bays, CAT scale, 31 truck parking spaces, 22 car parking spaces and four RV parking spaces. The more than 9,000-square-foot facility features a Hardee’s and Godfather’s Pizza and bean-to-cup coffee. It also offers four showers and a laundry.

New Jersey
Murphy USA’s QuickChek opened a new 5,869-square-foot c-store in East Hanover, New Jersey, on Aug. 15, the company’s fifth new store to open in the past five months. The store also features QuickChek’s modern look with a white exterior and green tower with the familiar green “Q.” An open floor plan with consumer-friendly, wide aisles features earth tone colors, clean sightlines and spacious standalone food displays. More than half of the new store is dedicated to freshly prepared made-to-order food and beverages. It also offers contactless self-checkout counters. Amenities include no-fee ATMs; 16 fueling positions; indoor seating for 10 people and outdoor seating for 16; and 61 parking spaces plus two oversized spaces for vehicles pulling trailers.
Wawa opened new c-stores in Hamilton, New Jersey, on Aug. 3, Oakhurst, New Jersey, on Aug. 21 and Clementon, New Jersey, on Aug. 31.

Byrne Dairy Co. opened a new Byrne Dairy & Deli location in Binghampton, New York, in mid-August.

Sheetz opened new c-stores in London, Ohio, on Aug. 8, Heath, Ohio, on Aug. 16, Huber Heights, Ohio, on Aug. 29 and Pataskala, Ohio, on Aug. 31.

BW Gas & Convenience Holdings opened a new Allsup’s c-store in Madill, Oklahoma, on Aug. 4.
Casey’s General Stores Inc. opened a new c-store in Oklahoma City on Aug. 18.

Pennsylvania
EG America closed a smaller, older Turkey Hill c-store—a former Kroger location—in Neffsville, Pennsylvania, in early August. It was built in 1971.
Marywood University and Gourmet Dining Services LLC opened a cashierless, on-campus c-store powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology and Amazon One, a palm-based biometric identity and payment service. Located in the entryway of the main dining room in the Nazareth Student Center, Marywood Pacer Nation opened its doors in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 4.
Sheetz opened a new c-store in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 12, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 24, and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 28. The 6,100-square-foot Lancaster location has 12 fuel stations. It is on a 2.4-acre property.
Giant Eagle opened a GetGo Café + Market in downtown Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in mid-August. It has six gas pumps. The 5,520-square-foot store is among larger GetGo locations. The company expects a lot of pedestrian traffic, so the store’s public restrooms are more spacious to accommodate parents with strollers.
Wawa opened a new c-store in Abington, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 24.
A Country Superette c-store opened on Aug. 31 in Erie, Pennsylvania. It features a gas station, deli, locally sourced products and an ice cream parlor.

Tennessee
Weigel’s Inc. opened a new c-store in Piney Flats, Tennessee, on Aug. 17. At 6,400 square feet, it is the chain’s largest location. It features Weigel’s Kitchen, serving pizza and Dippin’ Chicken, a Franke espresso machine, as well as bean-to-cup, nitro and organic drip coffee.
Casey’s General Stores Inc. opened a new c-store in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Aug. 24.

Texas
A Food Box c-store and Valero gas station opened Aug. 10 in Pflugerville, Texas. It features a Deli Box Kitchen serving sandwiches, burgers and tacos, as well as a Which Wich sandwich shop.
BW Gas & Convenience Holdings opened a new Allsup’s Express c-store in Waco, Texas, on Aug. 10. It opened an Allsup’s c-store in Andrews, Texas, on Aug. 23. The company closed an Allsup’s c-store—formerly a Tres Amigos location—in San Angelo, Texas. A sign on the closed door reads: “Our last day of business will be Aug. 20, 2023. It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of this community! We thank all of you for your business and support and would love to continue to serve you and one of our other nearby locations!
Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. opened a new location in Cotulla, Texas, on Aug. 24. It has nine diesel bays, CAT scale, 97 truck parking spaces, 70 car parking spaces and two RV parking spaces. The more than 19,500-square-foot facility features an Arby’s and bean-to-cup coffee. It also offers eight showers, laundry and Love’s Mobile to Go Zone, as well as a Speedco.
QuikTrip opened a new travel center in Texarkana, Texas, on Aug. 31.

Soni’s Valero, a new gas station, opened in Colleen, Virginia, on Aug. 2.
Sheetz opened new c-stores in Richmond, Virginia, on Aug. 10 and Herndon, Virginia, on Aug. 30.
Royal Farms opened new c-stores Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Aug. 24 and Richmond, Virginia, on Aug. 28. The Virginia Beach location features fried chicken, 16 fuel pumps and a carwash. The Richmond location features fried chicken and 14 fuel pumps.
