Consumer snacking habits are shifting—while they’re still largely having snacks multiple times a day, the type of snacks they’re looking for is changing. For instance, consumers are increasingly looking for snacks that offer nutritional benefits, including being high in protein—according to Technomic’s 2022 Snacking Consumer Trend Report, 46% of consumers say snacks that are high in protein are appealing. For convenience store retailers, offering fresh, high-quality snacking options that meet those nutritional demands can be a boon to the bottom line—and it can be done without adding extra labor.

Snacking attributes shoppers look for

Beyond nutritional aspects, shoppers looking for snacks at c-stores are also interested in how easy it is to eat their chosen snacks on the go. When eating snacks away from home, 55% of consumers eat them while en route to another location, Technomic’s Snacking report found, so portability can be a big selling point.  Other important attributes to consumers when choosing a snack include freshness (62% of consumers say so), and healthfulness (38%), says Technomic’s Snacking report. By combining freshness, healthfulness and portability, retailers can find a winning combo.

Unique, craveable options

Hot and fresh snacks can provide a unique experience that may be more appealing than traditional packaged snacks. Additionally, snacks that aren’t highly processed can also boost appeal and increase purchases. For example, nuts—including peanuts—give consumers the protein they’re looking for and the portability they need. And for retailers, offering hot boiled peanuts is as easy as can be. Consumers are, of course, familiar with peanuts, and offering options that deliver great flavor and convenience can be a big opportunity for retailers.

Expand foodservice with boiled peanuts

Peanut Patch boiled peanuts are the perfect hot and fresh snack for c-store foodservice. Peanut Patch peanuts, available in Original (Southern-style seasoning) and Cajun flavors, and are self-serve, meaning they don’t require additional staff for serving. Retailers can choose between kettle warmers or dual warmers, and consumers can easily fill up the cup of their choice—32 oz. and 16 oz. cups make on-the-go snacking easy. Microwavable deli containers are also available—perfect for grab-and-go snacking.

Beyond great taste and a protein boost, Peanut Patch peanuts give retailers the chance to offer something that sets them apart. While consumers may be used to seeing packaged or bagged mixed nuts or peanuts on the shelves, hot, fresh-boiled peanuts can represent a bit of novelty, which can encourage purchase if a shopper has never tried them. In short, boiled peanuts are the perfect addition to a c-store’s foodservice lineup—they’re packed with protein, hot and fresh, available in different sizes and flavors, don’t require additional labor from c-store workers and are portable and convenient.
