New attitude for tobacco? Impressive numbers around vaping devices as well as movement on the federal level regarding cigarettes are shining a brighter, more optimistic light on the tobacco category.

On the regulatory front, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is continuing its steady march toward new-product and modified-risk review, as well as its efforts to evaluate a potential standard on nicotine levels in cigarettes. At the same time, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb is renewing a call to explore the harm-reduction potential of electronic nicotine-delivery systems or ENDs, like e-cigarettes and vaping devices. That bodes well for retailers interested what ENDs will ultimately mean to their bottom lines.

The good news is that while still a small part of the overall category, closed-system vaporizers appear to be gaining traction at c-stores, according to 2017 numbers from Nielsen and other CPG research firms. These tobacco-focused developments and more will be a part of an upcoming webinar sponsored by CSP and Swedish Match, set for May 10, 2018 and featuring speakers from RBC Capital Markets and Swedish Match.
