Ranking the Top 40 C-Store Chains: A 2022 Update
By CSP Staff on Feb. 17, 2022CHICAGO — Consolidation continued to be the norm in 2021 as large chains acquired more stores while smaller chains and independents generally sold stores or held steady.
The largest deal in convenience-store history closed in 2021, giving 7-Eleven Inc. ownership of Speedway stores. Combined with 7-Eleven’s additional growth, the deal served to further cement 7-Eleven’s lead in the number of company-owned and -operated or franchised stores in the United States.
Murphy USA’s purchase of QuickChek, which closed in January of 2021 in a $645 million all-cash transaction, pushed it into fifth place on our list.
BP’s acquisition of Thorntons, which puts the chain at No. 7, will allow the vertically integrated oil company to grow its presence in the U.S. fuel and convenience retail business.
Finally, oil refiner Shell entered into an agreement to purchase Landmark Industries, which held the No. 35 spot in CSP’s 2021 Top 202.
CSP’s complete 2022 Top 202 list of the largest chains in the United States will be released in June, but we offer this early look at the current top 40 based on store counts as of Jan. 1, 2022.
