Wawa Adds 4 States to Its Footprint
By Rachel Gignac on Jun. 07, 2024On the heels of opening its first convenience store in North Carolina in mid-May, Wawa held three groundbreaking events last week in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
Wawa expects to open 10 new c-stores in North Carolina this year, about 40 new c-stores in North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana in 2025 and as many as 250 c-stores within the next five to 10 years in the states.

During the events, the Wawa, Pennsylvania-based chain welcomed VIP customers, state and local officials and charity partners to mark the start of construction, and the Wawa Foundation donated to several charities.

North Carolina
Wawa's first North Carolina c-store opened for business at 1900 Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
By the end of 2024, Wawa will have 10 stores open in North Carolina, nine slated to open before the end of summer. The new stores will serve Kill Devil Hills, Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City, Greenville and two stores in Wilson and Goldsboro.
In 2025, Wawa projects opening up to 11 stores in additional counties including Robeson, Pitt, Cumberland, Onslow, Johnston, Nash, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover.
Over the next eight to 10 years, Wawa plans to build and open six to eight stores per year, reaching a total of 90 stores in North Carolina.
Kentucky
Wawa broke ground on its first two stores in Kentucky, located at 9650 Preston Crossing Blvd. in Louisville and 3012 Lexington Road in Nicholasville. The company projects that the stores will open late in second-quarter 2025.
In 2025, Wawa plans to open nine stores in Kentucky. Over the next five to eight years, Wawa plans to build and open five to eight stores per year in the Louisville and Lexington area, with plans to open up to 40 stores in the state.
Wawa currently has more than 20 sites under contract across several Kentucky counties. Those sites are going through the local land development and permitting processes and include locations in the counties of Boone, Bullitt, Campbell, Fayette, Hardin, Jefferson, Jessamine, Oldham, Scott, Shelby, Simpson and Warren.
Wawa will begin construction on the following stores in 2024, with projected openings in third-quarter 2025:
- 9650 Preston Crossing Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky
- 3012 Lexington Road, Nicholasville, Kentucky
- 4314 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky
- 900 E. Main Street, Georgetown, Kentucky
- 1354 Veterans Parkway, Clarksville, Indiana
Ohio
In Ohio, the convenience-store chain began construction on its first location, at 5308 Fields Ertel Road, Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 2025, Wawa plans to open 11 stores in Ohio, and over the next 5-8 years, the convenience-store chain plans to build and open 6 to ten stores per year in Ohio, with plans to open up to 60 stores in the state.
Wawa, Wawa, Pennsylvania, currently has more than 20 sites under contract across Ohio counties. Those sites are going through the local land development and permitting processes and include locations in the counties of Allen, Butler, Clermont, Greene, Hamilton, Miami, Montgomery and Warren. In addition, Wawa plans to break ground on its first store in the Dayton, Ohio, market this summer with the date and location to be announced soon.
Wawa will begin construction on the following Ohio stores in 2024, with projected openings in the second quarter 2025:

Indiana
Indiana is also getting its first Wawa stores. The chain broke ground at the first location in the state, which is located at 3835 E. 96th St., Indianapolis.
In 2025, Wawa plans to open 10 stores in Indiana. Over the next five to eight years, Wawa aims to build and open eight to 12 stores per year in the state with plans to open up to 60 stores in the state.
Wawa currently has more than 23 sites under contract across several Indiana counties. Those sites are going through the local land development and permitting processes and include locations in the counties of Clark, Dearborn, Delaware, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Scott, Tippecanoe and Wayne.
Wawa will begin construction on the following Indiana stores in 2024, with projected openings in second-quarter 2025:

- 5550 W. 86th St., Indianapolis
- 2701 Westfield Road, Noblesville, Indiana
