Westec Expands Technology Base

Video surveillance services firm secures three acquisitions

IRVINE, Calif. -- Westec Interactive, a company known in the convenience channel for its video surveillance services, doubled in size and expanded its technology base with the acquisition of three separate companies, the firm announced yesterday.

The Irvine, Calif.-based company's purchase of DV Dallas and d2 Digital Designs, both of Dallas, and Sparta Consulting Group, of Frederick, Md., follows the company's recent announcement of $20 million in combined funding from Los Angeles-based Clarity Partners and Westec's CEO and owner Gerald Vento. According [image-nocss] to Vento, the acquisition expands the company's current capabilities both on a technological front and from a service standpoint.

We've said to our customers, now that you've invested in a digital video recorder platform, make it an intelligent platform, Vento told CSP Daily News, noting that video surveillance can also track customer movement patterns, document things like customer age range and ethnicity and identify affinity items. That's what this acquisition means.

The company now has 200-plus employees, three command centers (one of them set to open next month in West Des Moines, Iowa) and a network operating center in Frederick, Md. Westec now also monitors more than 2,000 sites nationwide supported from 16 regional offices.

Two of the three newly acquired companies will give Westec access to developing technology. DV Dallas, which provides remote video monitoring hardware to small, commercial and enterprise businesses, has also developed a video recorder that integrates alarm panel functionality, intelligent video applications and advanced video surveillance monitoring into a single platform.d2 Digital Designs, an application development company, develops advanced online applications for digital video, portals and training and interactive applications.

DV Dallas created a revolutionary digital video recording technology that changes the way central stations monitor and track events at customer sites, said Darjon Bittner, now vice president of technology development for Westec. Joining forces with Westec has given us the financial resources to continue developing new technologies and services that range from safety and security to GPS [global positioning system] asset tracking and data mining for marketing purposes. The combination of Westec, DV Dallas and D2 gives us the ability to bring better monitoring solutions to the marketplace.

Sparta Consulting Corp., provides security solutions for high-risk environments, such as housing developments, government municipalities and manufacturing facilities. All three companies will be divisions of Westec.

Westec is now delivering greater value to customers with much more than standard security, Vento said. We offer our customers customizable services that encompass day-to-day operational monitoring to help reduce overhead, increase profitability and improve overall operations.
