While the overall ready-to-drink (RTD) tea and coffee categories were down 1.4% in dollar sales and 6.2% in unit sales for 2020, some coffee segments showed growth, IRI data shows.

Cappuccino and iced coffees were up 1.8% in dollar sales and down by less than 1% in unit sales. RTD cold brews were up 52% in dollar sales and 44.8% in unit sales, IRI said.

For Overmohle, Starbucks and Black Rifle Coffee Co. have exceeded expectations.

“Bottled coffee was a top growth engine for Kum & Go before COVID-19, and it has done tremendous since April,” Overmohle says.

“Some consumers are still wary of self-served food and beverages, and bottled coffee is a great alternative.” The trends follow in all retail outlets, according to Packaged Facts.

“Coffee is loved as a stimulant and an indulgent, comforting beverage,” the Packaged Facts report said. “RTD coffee, especially cold brew, has driven sales.”
