BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Retailer MAPCO has hired convenience-store industry veteran Hal Adams as its new CEO, as reported in a CSP Daily News Flash.
Adams most recently was president of retail for San Antonio-based CST Brands, growing the Corner Store convenience-store brand until it was acquired by Alimentation Couche-Tard. That deal closed in June 2017, at which time Adams said he would take some time off before working on his next career move.
“I have had the great fortune of working in the convenience industry for 35 years,” he told CSP Daily News then. “It’s been great.”
Upon being named CEO of MAPCO, Adams said growth is in the works. “This is an incredibly exciting time for MAPCO’s growth, and I look forward to joining the team,” he said. “MAPCO is investing in its people and its stores, and I am a passionate believer that a culture of empowerment will drive strong business results.”
Adams joined CST Brands when it was spun off from Valero Energy in 2013. He'd worked at Valero since 2000. He has an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a bachelor's degree in business economics from UC Santa Barbara.
“We have been in a period of transition and growth focusing on establishing a new people-first culture that will enable MAPCO to be an industry innovator and a brand our guests can trust,” said Frederic Chaveyriat, interim CEO. “With Hal, we get not only an exceptional professional with a proven industry track record, but also a servant leader with a committed vision who knows how to inspire team members and deliver a best-in-class customer experience.”
MAPCO was acquired from Delek U.S. Holdings in 2016 by Compania de Petroleos de Chile (COPEC), an energy conglomerate based in Santiago, Chile. Then-MAPCO leader Tony Miller remained with Delek U.S., and Andy Scoggins, vice president of food and beverages, led the company until this past fall, when Chaveyriat of COPEC took over as interim CEO.
With about 350 c-stores, MAPCO ranked No. 24 in a year-end update of CSP’s2017 Top 202 list of the largest c-store chains in the United States.
