Diverse food programs make convenience stores a one-stop destination for meals

Core-Mark

Consumers appreciate the convenience of going to one place for both fuel and grab-and-go foods.

Core-Mark, a Performance Food Group company, wants to serve up total convenience for customers with its Fresh Take and grab-and-go offerings.

Designed to meet convenience demands with a commitment to a customer-focused approach, the company offers restaurant quality foodservice products. Core-Mark’s turnkey, one-stop shop programs allow c-store retailers to offer craveable, high-quality food to consumers, and meet their demands for meals and snacks across all dayparts.

Technomic’s November 2022 C-Store Market Annual Report showed that when consumers visit c-stores, a majority go into the store after buying gasoline or charging their electric cars; 32% said they go in every time, and 26% said they go in nearly every time.

The top four purchases that consumers said that they make, after fuel, are retail beverages, prepared beverages, retail food and prepared foods. From April 2022 to October 2022, the amount of consumers who said they typically purchase prepared foods when they enter a convenience store increased—from 35% in April, to 38% in July and up to 45% by October, according to Technomic's C-Store Market Annual Report.

For its Fresh Takes program, Core-Mark is partnering with Fresh & Ready Foods® to stock fresh sandwiches, salads and snacks for easy grab-and-go meals.

Core-Mark’s additional food products include distinctive, branded programs with food options including Southern fried chicken, classic barbecue choices, Latin-inspired foods and more:

  • Perfectly Southern is a full turnkey, one-stop shop that provides flexibility, low cost of entry and marketing support. Core-Mark takes care of everything—food supplies, point-of-sale and even equipment.
  • Core-Mark’s TruQ BBQ program offers items such as pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef brisket and smoked sausage. Step-by-step recipes keep preparation simple and labor costs low.
  • The Contigo program pays homage to Latin cuisine, serving up tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas and salads. Tortilla chips for nachos with guacamole and salsas for dipping are available, as well as churros and flan for dessert.
  • Core-Mark’s Red Seal Pizza partner program keeps meals fast and simple with par-baked crusts that workers simply need to sauce, cheese, top and bake.
  • Deli 55, another Core-Mark program, has made-to-order and grab-and-go options, and is a fast way to satisfy customers’ appetites all day. Deli 55’s line includes freshly made signature sandwiches, hearty soups, salads and other deli offerings such as paninis, burgers and, of course, hot dogs.

Many c-stores also offer a wide variety of hot case items, with pizza being one of the items leading the way. Of the warm/hot case items offered, 64% of convenience stores offer pizza, according to Technomic’s October 2022 C-Store Operator Update.

For retailers, being able to give consumers the option to eat virtually any food they may be craving offers huge sales opportunities—and making the c-store a one-stop destination for food for the whole family is great for busy shoppers.

Core-Mark gives c-stores opportunities to compete with not only nearby c-stores but fast-casual and even casual dining locations. Expanded programs are also available for beverages. To learn more about Core-Mark’s programs, visit www.core-mark.com.
