McALLEN, Texas -- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. will start selling its pastries at 24 McAllen-area Circle K convenience stores next Monday, and at 21 additional Valley stores beginning May 23, representatives from both companies told The Monitor.
People in the Valley have been asking for a Krispy Kreme, Kelly Zarbock, spokesperson for Corpus Christi, Texas-based SSP Partners, which operates Circle K stores, told the paper.
The doughnuts for McAllen-area Circle Ks will be trucked in each morning from Krispy Kreme's retail store in [image-nocss] Laredo, Texas, and from Corpus Christi for Harlingen and Brownsville, Texas-area stores, she said.
The doughnuts will be only hours off the line, Zarbock said.
Banners will be posted outside the Circle Ks selling the doughnuts, she added.
The c-stores will carry Krispy Kreme's glazed doughnuts, as well as 14 other types sold in the company's retail stores, said Angela Herrera, spokesperson for Austin, Texas-based Glazing Saddles, the area developer for Krispy Kreme.
In addition to its expansion through Circle K stores, the doughnut chain plans to open a retail store in McAllen, Herrera told the paper. The company has not set a time for the opening, nor acquired property for the venture, she said.
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Krispy Kreme is expanding into the Valley because it already is a partner with Circle K in other Texas cities, including 55 locations in the Corpus Christi and Laredo areas, Herrera said.
Customers will be able to buy doughnuts in bulk or by singles, and the pastries will be sold out of Krispy Kreme display cases in the Circle Ks, said Herrera.
In addition to the Circle Ks in the McAllen area, the launch will include stores in Edinburg, Pharr, Harlingen, Brownsville, Mission, San Benito, Weslaco, Los Indios, Palm Valley, La Feria, Port Isabel, Palmview, Olmito and South Padre Island. The chain has more than 160 stores throughout the Valley.
Circle K opened a convenience store in Edinburg, Texas, last week that will carry the pastries, and six more likely will be completed between this week and early June in Pharr, Harlingen, Brownsville, Los Indios, San Benito and Mission, Zarbock said. The company plans to open several across the state within 90 days, she said, and the newer stores will sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
