CHICAGO -- Takeout occasions are on the rise. As consumers recognize a wider range of foodservice channels to choose from, they’re opting for takeaway options much more frequently than they did just a few years ago, according to a new report.
This week, Technomic released a Consumer Flash unveiling several findings on consumers’ takeout decisions, drivers and behaviors. Although the insights are related specifically to the restaurant segment, the data reveals some important points for convenience stores to consider as they develop and enhance grab-and-go platforms and other elements of food to go.
Here are four elements trending in the takeout-consumer mindset ...
A third of consumers (33%) are ordering food to go more than they did three years ago. What’s behind this boost? Overall, 37% of consumers say that it’s simply because more places are offering food to go, according to Technomic data.
Another 37% of consumers say that they’re ordering takeout more often because it’s become part of their routine.
Think of how easy the takeout-ordering process has become in recent years, with online ordering and third-party dining apps, and it’s clear that takeout has evolved into a platform that fits more squarely into today’s consumer lifestyle.
Among consumers ages 18 to 34, 39% typically order more food during takeout occasions than they do when they dine in at a restaurant, according to Technomic data.
A third of consumers said that if a fast-food restaurant offered delivery, they’d choose that option. Even more consumers agreed about fast-casual restaurants: Thirty-eight percent said that if a fast casual offered delivery, they’d be likely to use that service.
About casual-dining restaurants, 24% of consumers would use a delivery service from a traditional casual full-serve, while 28% would choose delivery if the service were offered at a more upscale casual-dining restaurant.
