SALEM, Ore. -- The price of a pack of cigarettes sold in the state of Oregon will increase by 13 cents beginning Jan. 1, according to an Associated Press report.
In a special session last fall, state lawmakers decided to raise the cigarette tax to $1.31 a pack.
The state Revenue Department said tobacco taxes bring in about $250 million a year, according to the report. The money supports the Oregon Health Plan and general fund. Portions are dedicated to cities, counties, transit and programs for mental health and to reduce tobacco use.
The tax is typically part of the price of cigarettes, but the Revenue Department reminds consumers they should also pay the tax on cigarettes purchased online or out-of-state.
