In 2017, consumers chose c-stores over quick-service and fast-casual restaurants more than other restaurant segments, according to Technomic’s first-quarter Convenience Store Consumer Marketbrief. Convenience stores also won more coffee and beverage consumers than in 2017.

Sixteen percent more consumers in 2017 than in 2016 said their increased c-store visits were at the expense of coffee and beverage restaurants. Beverages rank among the top three items consumers purchase at convenience stores, preceded only by gas and food. Consumers 18 to 34 years old are the top drivers of food and beverage purchases, dining away from home more than other groups.
