DETROIT — Kum & Go LC is headed to the Motor City and intends to dominate convenience retailing in the Wolverine State. The retailer is continuing its expansion into Michigan with a set of Detroit-area convenience stores it expects to open in 2024, with plans for more than 50 total locations in the market over the next several years, it said.

“We are excited to announce our entry into the Detroit market,” Tanner Krause, CEO at Kum & Go, said. “We’ve been warmly welcomed as we prepare to enter the Grand Rapids area and with the addition of Detroit, believe Kum & Go will be the lead convenience operator across the state as we continue our growth and expansion. Michigan is full of great people and great communities, and we know Kum & Go’s fresh perspective to convenience will create many opportunities there.”

  • Kum & Go is No. 18 on CSP’s 2022 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

Currently, the Des Moines, Iowa-based, family-owned chain has 409 stores in 11 states: Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming. Kum & Go recently has launched a wide-reaching growth initiative, announcing impending expansion into several new markets.

In May 2021, Kum & Go said it will enter the Utah market—its first new state in a decade—with 30 Salt Lake City-area stores set to begin opening this year. The retailer will open its first location in the Beehive State on Dec. 19 in Draper, Utah, the company told CSP Daily News.

In July 2021, the retailer said it will enter the state of Michigan with a set of c-stores in the Grand Rapids area, which the retailer expects to open in January 2023, the company said.

And in February 2022, Kum & Go said it will enter the Idaho market with 20 to 25 stores in the Boise area over the next five years, set to begin opening in third-quarter 2023, said the company.

“We’re thrilled to continue our expansion in Michigan with this move into the Detroit area,” said Niki Mason, Kum & Go’s senior vice president of store development. “Detroit’s ever evolving and changing city presents an exciting opportunity for growth and expansion. We’re excited to start serving and connecting with this community.”
