On May 1, Chuck Maggelet will retire as CEO and “Chief Adventure Guide” at Salt Lake City-based convenience-store chain Maverik, and Crystal Maggelet, chairman and CEO of Maverik’s parent company FJ Management, will step into the CEO role, the couple announced in a YouTube video posted Thursday.

Crystal Maggelet also said the two are getting divorced, and that she will take over leadership of the chain while the company conducts a search for a permanent CEO.

“To say this was a challenging decision is an understatement,” Chuck Maggelet said in the video, which was later deleted from YouTube. “As you hopefully know by now, I think Maverik’s a truly special place. The work we do, the people doing it, and the bold decisions we make have created an incredible success story. But I really believe this is the right decision at the right time for Maverik and me. Serving more than seven years as Maverik’s chief adventure guide has been the best job on the planet, no doubt. Together we’ve accomplished incredible things, but I believe the best is yet to come.”

CSP reported earlier that Salt Lake City-based convenience-store retailer Maverik, which last year bought Des Moines, Iowa-based c-store chain Kum & Go, is retiring the brand’s name by 2025. Both chains have about 400 stores. In August, Maverik closed on The Krause Group’s chain for an estimated $2 billion. Maverik in August 2023 said it would rebrand Kum & Go stores in shared markets including Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming and continue to evaluate further changes. Maverik still has not announced any confirmed plans outside of rebranding stores in existing Maverik markets.

Chuck Maggelet, who just turned 60, said he wants to embrace new challenges and push himself to continue learning, growing and exploring.

Crystal Maggelet then mentioned another change: The two are getting divorced.

The couple celebrated 30 years of marriage last year and have had “an amazing ride, but over the years, we’ve grown apart,” she said. “While we remain friends, it is time to divorce and independently move on with our lives. I tell you this because I consider our team members family and I believe you have a right to know.”

Crystal Maggelet said the divorce will in no way change the ownership structure of Maverik, Kum & Go or FJ Management. “Our company’s future remains bright thanks to our dedication and continued hard work,” she said.

Crystal Maggelet then said she will take over the role of CEO and work closely with the executive team in the coming months “to lead us forward. As Chuck does today, I will play a key role in critical decision-making.”

Crystal Maggelet added that she has been a CEO before: In 2008, “I went from being a stay-at-home mom to CEO of Flying J.”

She has 15 years of CEO experience, she has served 12 years on the Maverik board, and “is excited and ready to take on the role of Maverik’s chief adventure guide. We’re also kicking off a rigorous and robust search for Maverik’s next CEO.”

Chuck Maggelet added, “Maverik will always hold a special place in my heart, and while I won’t be leading from the front, I will never stop cheering on this team.”
