Quick Chek shows LEEDership in latest Jersey store
BAYONNE, N.J. -- In the gritty, working-class town of Bayonne, N.J., Neil dons his green Quick Chek cap and is bantering with Hector, five years his senior.

It's mid-day Monday, just hours before lightning bolts and thunder jolts would punish the ground, and more than 100 employees, residents and local officials are doing their own rumbling. With music blasting and friends and strangers backslapping, Quick Chek celebrated the grand opening of its 124th store at East 53rd Street, an attractive brick structure that also is the retailer's first to qualify for Leadership in [image-nocss] Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

"I'm very excited about working here," said Neil, a local resident who is eager to share how he landed his job. "About a month ago, I went to the Quick Chek on 38th Street and saw a man in a suit and Quick Chek pin on his lapel, so I figured he was the manager."

He was the "ultimate" managerDean Durling, Quick Chek's CEO. "He was very nice," said Neil. "He gave me a resume to fill out. I filled it out in a few hours and three days later I got the call."

Hector, a loquacious 21-year-old, will be working the 10 dispensers in the forecourt, where New Jersey is one of only two states in the country (the other is Oregon) that requires full-serve. "I've heard what a great place Quick Chek is to work for," he said. "I can't wait to get started."

Neil and Hector are among the 40 employees who will be staffing the location just a few miles south of Liberty International Airport. Joining them were a legion of Bayonne Little Leaguers, who will be the recipient of Quick Chek's largesse25 cents of every sub and sandwich sold here for the first month will go to the local Little League.
