Getty Station Fined

Two pumps shut down over overcharging

HOWELL, N.J. -- A Howell, N.J., Getty station has been fined and had two of its pumps shut down after a customer reported being overcharged, authorities said Friday, reported the Asbury Park Press.

On January 12, the customer complained to Howell police that based on the pump readings, attendants had put more gasoline in the customer's vehicle than the tank could hold. Police called county officials, who investigated, said the report.

The county's Weights & Measures Department found that the gallon reading was not off, but [image-nocss] that incorrect pricing was being calculated. One pump test revealed it was pumping $2.50 per gallon when the advertised price was $2.45 9/10 per gallon, Monmouth County spokesperson William Heine told the newspaper.

A second pump was registering at two cents over the posted price, Heine added.

The station has eight pumpsone of which was not in serviceand seven were tested. The two pumps not charging the correct prices were shut down by county officials, the report said.

The company has advised officials that those two pumps have been repaired. The county will check the pumps, and if they are operating properly, the restrictions will be removed, Heine said.

The company was fined the maximum $100 per pump for the violations, for a total of $200, Heine told the paper. The station and pumps are old, and there was no indication of tampering, he said.
