Chain will deploy, retrofit Gilbarco solution

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. said it plans to deploy Gilbarco's SMART Connect at all new and future locations. The company also plans to retrofit SMART Connect at their existing 60 eligible locations that have Gilbarco Eclipse and Encore 500 dispensers by June 2006.

SMART Connect improves uptime and lowers service costs on dispensers by enabling remote diagnostics and troubleshooting, according to Terry Ross, vice president and general manager of service at Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Greensboro, N.C. The product also helps merchants react quickly to conditions [image-nocss] that slow the flow of fuel at the dispensers, he said.

We are confident that better information about our sites and better control will translate into an even greater overall time-savings and pleasant shopping experience for our customers, said Mark Wilson, director of store support for Sheetz, Altoona, Pa.

SMART Connect allows retailers to link components, applications and systems at a site or a network of sites to better manage forecourt operations. It allows dispensers, point-of-sale (POS) systems and automatic tank gauges to communicate with each other so that retailers can access, analyze and act on data collected across the forecourt.

Using the internet, e-mail and text message notification, SMART Connect provides site data to the right people at the right time. Decision-makers can use SMART Connect data to ensure consistent, acceptable flow rates and eliminate unnecessary filter changes by using real-time flow rate data to proactively correct low flow conditions. With alarm reporting and error code analysis, trained service technicians can remotely diagnose and resolve alarm conditions or intelligently dispatch an authorized service contractor when needed.

With more than 35,000 sites supported in North America, Gilbarco Veeder-Root's Fuel Management Services (FMS) provide the infrastructure for retailers to make the most of SMART Connect. When used with FMS, retailers can access site data whenever they want it with an easy-to-use internet interface, instant polling features and actionable, exception-based reporting.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root business lines include fuel dispensing and control; site and retail management; support services; and environmental compliance technologies. The company unites brands offered by Gilbarco Inc. and The Veeder-Root Co. Gilbarco supplies fuel dispensing equipment and fully integrated POS systems. Veeder-Root supplies automatic tank gauging, leak detection and fuel management systems, including Red Jacket(R) submersible pumps.

Sheetz has more than 300 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
