Sheetz Seeks to Manage IT 'Spread'

Accuvant helping retailer protect data, improve PCI compliance
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Convenience store chain Sheetz Inc. has inked a deal with Accuvant, a research-driven information security partner delivering "alignment, clarity and confidence" to enterprise clients, to deploy remote-access IT management and web filtering solutions for Sheetz's stores.

"Sheetz is completely focused on providing its customers with outstanding experiences every time they stop to shop or get gas at one of our stores," said Robert Kemp, manager of IT security for Sheetz. "We want to make sure people are comfortable shopping with us, which includes the safety [image-nocss] and security of their personal and financial information. Accuvant took the time to understand our needs and helped us to select the right products for our environment and meet our IT objectives."

PCI compliance requires customer credit-card data that is stored, processed or transmitted be protected. Sheetz needed to ensure the integrity and security of its customer credit-card data as it flowed through its point-of-sale (POS) system, across a wide-area network (WAN) and finally, on to its corporate office. To help with this critical project, Sheetz contacted Accuvant.

"Due to Sheetz's rapid growth, their data became spread across a large and technically complex network," said Mark Bennett, area vice president of sales for Accuvant. "Based on our diverse knowledge of various environments, we recommended a solution that would secure customer data, could be rolled out consistently across the entire company and would enable Sheetz to continue to meet its security requirements, commitment to customers and uphold its reputation for quality."

Accuvant deployed a remote access IT management solution that provides Sheetz administrators with the ability to maintain, proactively update and secure the company's POS systems remotely from a central location. Additionally, the web filtering component of the solution allows the company to analyze Internet surfing habits of employees throughout the company, identifying and blocking any inappropriate or illegal activity that could lead to vulnerabilities in the security network.

"As a result of Accuvant's complete solution, we now have greater visibility into our network and can better enforce critical security policies and protect customer information," added Kemp. "The risk of data breaches is greatly reduced, assuring customers that their financial data is safe when they shop at Sheetz."

Denver-based Accuvant is a research-driven information security partner delivering alignment between IT security and business objectives, clarity to complex security challenges and confidence in enterprise security decisions, it said. Accuvant delivers these solutions through three practice areas: Risk and Compliance Management, Accuvant LABS and Technology Solutions.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz operates more than 350 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.
