Murphy USA CFO Galagher Jeff has left the company, the convenience retailer announced on Friday.

“Mr. Jeff’s departure from the company is not the result of any disagreement with the company regarding any matters related to its operations or otherwise related to the company’s financial performance or condition,” Murphy USA said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • Murphy USA is No. 4 on CSP’s 2025 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by store count.

The filing said his departure was effective as of Oct. 14. Murphy USA’s board of directors appointed Donald R. Smith Jr., current vice president, chief accounting officer and treasurer, to serve as the company’s interim CFO. Before working at Murphy USA, Smith was with accounting firm KPMG, LLP for 14 years, working in various roles, including senior manager in the audit and assurance practice.

Jeff had been with Murphy USA for less than two years, according to his LinkedIn page. He previously worked at Dollar Tree Stores, Advance Auto Parts and Walmart.

The news comes three weeks after Murphy USA laid off approximately 100 corporate employees. The company said at the time that the reorganization was part of a broader effort to strengthen operational effectiveness and position the company for long-term success.

In Murphy’s second-quarter 2025 earnings call in July, President and CEO Andrew Clyde said when it came to non-fuel performance on existing stores, Murphy USA was about $20 million behind their expectations for 2028, which included $1.3 billion in projected EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization).

El Dorada, Arkansas-based Murphy USA operates Murphy USA, Murphy Express and QuickChek convenience-store chains. It has more than 1,760 locations in 27 states, located primarily in the Southwest, Southeast, Midwest and Northeast. It acquired Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based QuickChek in January 2021.
