The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) filed for scientific review modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) renewal applications submitted by Swedish Match USA on Thursday.

In 2019, the FDA issued modified risk granted orders for eight smokeless tobacco products made by Swedish Match USA, Richmond, Virginia. The orders expire in 2024, so to continue marking the MRTPs after the five-year term, the company submitted an MRTP renewal application to the FDA, the agency said.

The FDA then filed eight MRTP renewal applications for scientific review.

The applications cover General Snus smokeless tobacco products including:

  • General Loose
  • General Dry Mint Portion Original Mini
  • General Portion Original Large
  • General Classic Blend Portion White Large-12ct
  • General Mint Portion White Large
  • General Nordic Mint Portion White Large-12ct
  • General Portion White Large
  • General Wintergreen Portion White Large

The public may submit comments on these applications to the FDA on the Federal Register’s website. Application documents will be posted on the CTP website on a rolling basis. Once all the materials for the MRTP applications have been made publicly available, the FDA will announce a closing date of the comment period, which will be no earlier than 180 days from the date of the Federal Register notice and at least 30 days from the date FDA posts the last application materials, the agency said.
