The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) has selected John Verbeten as director of the CTP’s office of compliance and enforcement beginning on June 16.  He will replace Ele Ibarra-Pratt and Jill Atencio, who currently serve as the acting office directors.

Verbeten comes to CTP from the FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), where he served as the deputy director for import operations enforcement within the Office of Enforcement and Import Operations (OEIO).

In his new role, he will look to “achieve the center’s critical mission to make tobacco-related death and disease part of our nation's past by ensuring a healthier future and advancing health equity for those living in the United States,” the agency said.

With over 20 years of experience, Verbeten most recently led the FDA import operational strategy and response to the national infant formula shortage, including supporting the Biden Administration’s initiative to mitigate the shortage by implementing screening criteria changes to expedite importation of infant formula from historical suppliers and those identified under the agency's enforcement discretion program.  He has also championed operations in support of FDA’s artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning initiatives.

He was selected after an extensive nationwide search, multiple interview panels that evaluated a well-qualified applicant pool and clearance through important FDA ethics and security processes, according to the CTP announcement.
