2020 was an unpredictable year during which convenience retailers, and indeed all Americans, rolled with seemingly infinite changes as best they could. For the candy-products category, consumers’ urges to treat themselves were offset by safety issues that kept shoppers home, and it added up to flat sales overall.
“2020 was an outlier statistically,” says Lou DiMarco, executive vice president of candymaker Hilco, a division of CandyRific. “You can’t build a business [plan] on last year’s performance.”
