Stewart's Shops Philly Vanilla Named No. 1

World Dairy Expo contest honors retailer's ice cream
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Stewart's Shops Philly Vanilla ice cream has been named the No. 1 vanilla ice cream in the world, the convenience store-dairy retailer said. That was the word from the judges for the upcoming World Dairy Expo 2009, to be held in Madison, Wis.

Philly Vanilla, pure vanilla ice cream speckled with crushed vanilla beans, beat 24 other contenders from around the globe to be named the No. 1 vanilla ice cream in the world.

"This is a great example of the focus on fresh ingredients and quality that our customers enjoy everyday. All of us at Stewart's [image-nocss] thank the hardworking people in our Ice Cream department," said Stewart's Shops president Gary Dake.

The judges at this year's World Dairy Championship Dairy Product Contest tested all the entries for flavor, body and texture, appearance and color and melting quality. The award will be given out on September 29 at the World Dairy Expo.

Philly Vanilla is available in both pint and half-gallon sizes. To celebrate the honor, half gallons of Philly Vanilla will be on sale for $2.99 the week of September 14 at all 327 Stewart's Shops.

Philly Vanilla is named after Philly Dake, the inventor of the chain's Make Your Own Sundae, the Make Your Own Scholarship for the college-age children of Stewart's employees and the one who recently gave a gift of $775,000 worth of "My Money Cards" to the more than 4,000 Stewart's employees.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-based Stewart's Shops operates 327 dairy and convenience stores, including 270 with gasoline, in upstate New York and southern Vermont.
