Fortune Smiles on QuikTrip

Tulsa-based retailer takes "best companies to work for" honor for 11th consecutive year

TULSA, Okla. -- QuikTrip Corp. has made Fortune magazine's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list for the 11th year in a row. The Tulsa, Okla.-based convenience retailer took the No. 66 slot, the same ranking as last year.

It is the only convenience/gasoline retailing company on the list.

"Obviously, for one to be considered for this is an honor, but to make it 11 years in a row, it kind of validates a lot of things that Quiktrip has always tried to do," company spokesperson Mike Thornbrugh told The Tulsa World.

He said the company has garnered attention because of its low employee turnover, its higher pay than competitors and its policy of promoting nearly all of its executives from within.

"To us, it's a tremendous honor. To a large degree, it's a validation of QuikTrip's core principles," Thornbrugh told The Oklahoman in a separate interview. "The face and the voice of QuikTrip are the men and women in those red shirts who are waiting on people 24 hours a day."

Other notable industry-related companies to make the 2013 Fortune list included Wegmans (No. 5), Whole Foods (No. 32), Nugget Market (No. 34), General Mills (No. 63), Publix (No. 77), Starbucks (No. 94) and Mars (No. 95).

The Fortune list of great places to work is compiled largely through a series of associate surveys. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the survey, which asked questions related to associates' attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which included questions about pay and benefit programs, hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, social responsibility and diversity efforts.

QuikTrip operates nearly 650 convenience stores with gasoline in Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.
