Retailer Mega Consumers Cooperative will close 13 of its 31 stores this week after its parent companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, Madison.

Cenergy LLC and Consumers Cooperative Association of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, jointly own the chain of 31 convenience stores, most of which operate under the Holiday brand in northwestern Wisconsin.

The retailer intends to continue operating the remaining 18 c-stores while the companies move through the bankruptcy process, according to court documents accessed by CSP Daily News. The restructuring process “will allow the co-op to address its capital structure to strengthen its business for the long term,” the company said in a statement provided to CSP.

“The co-op believes that the remaining 18 locations will continue to serve our community and cooperative members,” CEO Mike Buck said. “Our members can expect to continue receiving the many benefits that the Co-op offers and as we look forward, can expect that the co-op will continue to identify ways to enhance the cooperative member benefits.”

First established in 1935, the Co-op has served Eau Claire and surrounding communities for nearly nine decades, and today employs over 200 people in the area.

“As a local cooperative, we believe that our members and our team members are our most important assets and as such, the Co-op is committed to ensure that any team member currently working at a location that is closing will be offered a position at one of our remaining 18 locations,” the company said.

Court documents list KLC Financial of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Citizens Community Federal National Association of Altoona, Wisconsin, as the largest creditors to Consumers Cooperative.
