7-Eleven Bringing Back Slurpee BYO Cup Day … Twice

Retailer aiming to repeat social-media buzz

IRVING, Texas --7-Eleven Inc. is bringing back its Bring Your Own Cup (BYOCup) Day, for two days instead of one.

the convenience-store retailer is inviting customers to bring in a container and fill it with their favorite Slurpee from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 19 and Aug. 20. The cost to fill their chosen “cup” at participating stores is $1.50, the average cost of a medium Slurpee drink.

Each person can only bring in one container, which must be leak-proof, safe and sanitary, and fit upright through an in-store display with a 10-inch-diameter hole. That means no trash cans or trash bags, kiddie pools or kitchen sinks. For those who forget, 7-Eleven has 32-ounce Slurpee fishbowls available for purchase for just $3.99, while supplies last.

“This is Slurpee's 50th birthday year, so everything is bigger, and that includes BYOCup Day,” said Laura Gordon, 7-Eleven’s vice president of marketing and brand innovation. “This year's event is double the days and happening twice as many times. Last time, lots of people posted photos on social media, unofficially competing for 'most unusual' honors.”

To encourage social media participation, 7-Eleven is using the hashtag #BYOCupDay so Slurpee fans can share their crazy containers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. An animated Slurpee lens for Snapchat users will add to the messaging fun Aug. 19, and a Snapchat geofilter will be available at stores on both days.

“We started Slurpee season in the spring with BYOCup days, and we are closing out the summer with a second round,” Gordon said.

7-Eleven convenience stores in Australia, Canada, the Philippines and Malaysia have held BYOCup Days.

Based in Irving, Texas, 7‑Eleven operates, franchises and licenses approximately 59,800 7‑Eleven c-stores in 17 countries, including 10,700 in North America.
