Bad Gas Relief

Mich. retailer paying for auto repairs

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A gas station owner in Ann Arbor, Mich., was busy making repairs and offering refunds Wednesday after he unintentionally sold bad gasoline that caused many cars to break down, according to a report from WXYZ TV.

BP gas station owner Paul Berry realized there was a problem on Tuesday morning. "We had a leak in one of the tanks. It was a pressure release valve in one of the tanks that failed [and] got some water in the gas," he told the TV station's news reporter.

By the time the problem had been spotted, [image-nocss] about 600 gallons of the premium fuel had been pumped. Fourteen drivers complained about the bad gasoline, and Berry thinks there may be up to 25 more.

Customer Brian Craig said, "I made it about 2 miles down the road and my car started sputtering and my warning lights went on. It's a fairly new car so I called the dealership. The dealership said just bring the car in.' I didn't even make it another 2 miles before the car died on the side of the road."

When Craig had his car towed to the Lexus dealership, there were four other cars with the same problem.

Berry said he thought the problem was fixed by Tuesday afternoon, but more drivers were having car problems after pumping the premium gas on Wednesday.

He said they are doing anything they can to get the affected vehicles fixed as fast as possible. Customers can bring in their repair bill and some sort of proof that they pumped gas at that station, such as a receipt or sample of gas.

Berry said he could lose up to $10,000 and is hoping his insurance will cover the costs.
