MEMPHIS, Tenn. --Grocery retailer Schnuck Markets Inc. said that it will expand its Schnucks Express fuel center lineup by acquiring two existing Mid-South convenience stores formerly operated as Fill n Stations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The stores were previously owned by Hupo LLC, a two-store company based in Germantown, Tenn., owned and operated by Edmund Mrok.
Attempts to reach Mrok for comment were unsuccessful.
Schnucks Mid-South Division Manager John O'Donnell said this is a strategic [image-nocss] expansion for the company. The Schnucks Express fuel centers will enable us to enhance our convenience offerings and provide additional value to our customers on both the fuel and grocery sides, said O'Donnell. These stations will help to round out our overall one-stop shopping experience for customers.
The sale was finalized last Monday, and one of the c-stores, located one-half mile west of Schnucks Forest Hill in Germantown, began operating as a Schnucks Express last Thursday. That facility is now fully equipped to accept Schnucks coupons and special offers, the company said.
The Fill n Station across from the Cordova, Tenn., Schnucks was converted last Friday.
The Germantown location has been granted a license to sell beer, according to a report by The Commercial Appeal.
Schnucks entered the Mid-South marketand the gasoline businessin 2002 when the company acquired 12 Seessel's grocery stores and five convenience and fuels centers from Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's Inc. In 2004, Schnucks built two new stores in Collierville and Stonebridge, Tenn., and a replacement store in Germantown.
St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets operates 101 grocery stores, including five Logli grocery stores and 98 pharmacies, in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee and Mississippi.
Separately, West Des Moines, Iowa-based grocery retailer Hy-Vee Inc. said recently that it is building a Hy-Vee super store with gasoline in Newton, Iowa. The company said it expects the location to open in time for Thanksgiving, according to the Newton Daily News.
