OAK BROOK, Ill. -- The results of a series of Kraft/CSP Daily News Polls shortly after New Years offers some indication as to the priorities on which readers plan to focus in 2007, not only for themselves, but also for their companies and for the industry.
When asked What is your No. 1 personal resolution for 2007?, most (more than 52% or 167 of 320 respondents) answered lose weight/get in shape. A very distant second (nearly 15% or 47 respondents) answered focus more on family, friends. Only about 3% (9 respondents) said focus more on career.
To the question What is your No. 1 resolution for your company for 2007?, many (more than 20% or 45 out of 219 respondents to that day's poll) took the opposite approach from the personal resolution and said acquire/build more stores. In other words, to gain rather than lose. The top choice for this resolution, however, was improve an existing program/revamp product mix, chosen by nearly 23% (50 respondents).
Upgrade technology also rated relatively high in the results for business resolutions (more than 14% or 31 respondents).
And 14 respondents (more than 6%) said, none/I wouldn't change a thing.
Fighting credit card fees was far and away the leading choice for the question What do you think should be the industry's No. 1 resolution for 2007? More than 53% (149 of 285 respondents to that day's poll) answered in that way. Work to stabilize gas prices came in second with nearly 17% (48 respondents), and focus more on energy independence came in third with 13% (37 respondents).
And in a triumph of optimism over pessimism, nearly 60% of respondents (142 of 245) to a late-December poll asking How do you expect your 2007 to compare to your 2006?, said it would be better," while more than 30% (75 respondents) said it would be the same and more than 11% (28 respondents) said it would be worse.
