Valero Closes Two San Angelo Locations

Were part of purchase of Albertson's sites

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Valero Energy Corp. has closed two of its three San Angelo, Texas, gas station locations. The Valero sites near the two Albertson's supermarkets closed up shop and shut off the fuel pumps Friday, according to a report by The San Angelo Standard-Times.

The other Valero gasoline station in San Angelo is still operating, the report said. Valero supplies and maintains the gasoline pumps at that site, and Taylor Petroleum Cos. runs the convenience store, the report added.

"They didn't tell us anything," William Barnes, store director of Albertson's [image-nocss] told the newspaper. "There are no cars over there and the pumps are all shut off."

Aside from the location of the fuel station and convenience stores, Albertson's hasn't had any part in the operations since Valero attained ownership last year.

The San Antonio, Texas-based oil refining and marketing company bought the two San Angelo sites from the grocer last summer. Valero also acquired 70 other Albertson's fueling kiosks and convenience stores from Albertson's throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arizona and Colorado. (Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage.)

The gasoline dispensers and convenience stores at the two locations will be indefinitely closed, Bill Day, executive director of media relations for Valero, told the paper.

Day insisted the company is not pulling out of San Angelo, and said that Valero will continue to own and maintain the fueling kiosks at remaining location.

He added that when Valero bought the Albertson's gasoline units in San Angelo, it was intended as a short-term move. "Those locations are up for sale. When Valero bought the 72 locations from Albertson's those sites were included in there. They were smaller locations than we usually run," Day told the Standard-Times. "We're actively marketing those specific sites, and it's even possible that they won't be convenience stores or gas stations."
