Kum & Go's Krause talks recession, competition, customer service, social media
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- In an interview with The Tulsa World, Kyle J. Krause, president and CEO of Kum & Go LC, said the chain has not been hit as hard as other business by the recession. "Fortunately for Kum & Go, our stores are mainly in the Midwest, so we have not felt the recession quite as hard as businesses on the coasts; however, we understand the importance of staying on top of market movements to ensure our product pricing is as competitive as possible for our customers."

Kum & Go entered the Tulsa, Okla., market in 2004 and currently has 28 [image-nocss] stores in the metropolitan area. A new store opens in Broken Arrow in the fall.

Krause told the newspaper that even though Tulsa, Okla., is the home turf of rival QuikTrip Corp., "We saw Tulsa as a vibrant community, and we believe that Kum & Go can offer its residents more choice in the convenience space. As I'm sure QuikTrip would agree, there's always room for some healthy competition. As for the future, we plan to continue our growth in the Tulsa metro area."

He added, "We really enjoy the Tulsa community and look forward to our future growth."

Krause said that the way Kum & Go differentiates itself from other convenience stores "comes down to service. We have had a lot of success being fast, friendly and convenient for our customers. It's something we take pride in but also continually work to improve."

Part of providing good customer service is communication. With a presence on Facebook and Twitter, the chain is using social networking as "another avenue for Kum & Go and its customers to communicate with each other," Krause told the paper.

"We want to make sure we can engage customers comfortably with social media networks, to allow us to keep them abreast of offerings and allow them to provide us with much-needed feedback. We've built quite a fan base and tweet quite often, so be sure to check us out. We try to keep it fun and fresh, so you never know what we will be up to next. Just for fun, tweet 'Tulsa World coffee deal' to @kumandgo to receive a coupon for a free 20-oz. Java Ridge coffee at Kum & Go."

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go has more than 400 convenience stores in 12 states (Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wyoming and Wisconsin). In addition to a wide selection of products, Kum & Go provides customers a proprietary mix of products under the Hiland brand name. Other proprietary product offerings include Java Ridge Premium Coffee, Napa Creek and Sea Ridge wines, Go Fresh Market sandwiches, Nuclear energy drinks and Nutri2O nutraceutical waters.
