Sheetz Among the Best Workplaces for Women

Retailer among top dozen on list of 100 companies

ALTOONA, Pa. --Sheetz Inc. took its place among the top dozen companies in Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Workplaces for Women rankings. The Keystone State convenience-store retailer earned the No. 12 spot on the list.

At Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz, 66% of the employees are women, and 64% are in executive or managerial positions.

Published with Fortune’s partner Great Place to Work, the 100 Best Workplaces for Women ranking is based on feedback from more than 137,762 women at Great Place to Work–certified companies. They completed an anonymous Trust Index survey, answering questions about how frequently they experience the behaviors that create a great workplace, including their assessment of how fairly they are treated regardless of gender, the quality and authenticity of communications with managers and equitable pay and promotion practices.

Separately, Sheetz has made the list of the 100 companies in Pennsylvania to win a designation as a “Best Place to Work” by the Team Pennsylvania Foundation, founded by The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and the Central Penn Business Journal.

"We are a family owned and operated company, and that is a factor on how we make decisions as a company," said Sheetz CEO said Joe Sheetz. "We know to have a company operate 24/7 our employees need to feel engaged and valued. Creating an environment that supports people in and outside of work isn't just an issue for women, it's an issue for all employees, and our goal is to make sure that we have created programs at Sheetz to achieve that."

The foundation has released the alphabetical list (by headquarters) of companies. This year’s list represents 30,256 employees of 76 small and medium-size companies and 24 large companies.

To be eligible, companies had to employ at least 25 people in Pennsylvania and be in business for at least one year. Team Pennsylvania administered a survey to employees and employers. It chose winners based on which received the highest combined scores in a review of a company’s workforce policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics (25%) and from the results of a survey measuring employee satisfaction (75%).

Team Pennsylvania will release the numerical ranking in December.
