Curtis Oil Sells SuperAmerica Franchise

Franchisor will continue to operate stations

DULUTH, Minn. -- Curtis Oil is selling eight franchised SuperAmerica gas stations to SuperAmerica, according to a report by Fox 21.

Curtis Oil has owned the locations for more than 45 years.

Woodbury, Minn.-based SuperAmerica (SA) will continue to operate the stations and keep its nearly 90 employees, District Manager Mike Letica told the newspaper.

Curtis Oil is closing one SuperAmerica location that is on a large lot at Curtis Oil headquarters in Hermantown, Minn. The future of the property has not been determined and could eventually become a new SuperAmerica, Letica said.

Curtis Oil co-owner Jack Curtis is planning to retire, which is the reason for selling the SuperAmerica stations, the report said. The Curtis oil and propane business will continue to expand.

“After 46-plus years of operating, we are eternally thankful for the many years of patronage the Duluth-area residents have shown our stores,” Curtis Oil said in a statement. “While the stores will remain in the SuperAmerica family, Curtis Oil will no longer own or operate the stores in the Duluth area. The store employees and faces you’ve come to know will continue to be part of the SA family of stores as they join 190-plus locations already operated by SuperAmerica. Thank you so much, it’s been a privilege to do business with you. As we have done for 57-plus years, Curtis Oil and Propane will continue to offer fuel oil and propane service to heat your home.”

Curtis Oil did not responded to a CSP Daily News request for comment by posting time. SuperAmerica declined to comment.

Northern Tier Energy LP’s Northern Tier Retail LLC operates 192 convenience stores under the SuperAmerica brand, and SuperAmerica Franchising LLC supports 94 franchised stores, which also use the SuperAmerica brand. The 286 SuperAmerica stores are located primarily in Minnesota and Wisconsin and sell gasoline, merchandise and, in some locations, diesel fuel. Northern Tier Bakery LLC prepares and distributes food products under the SuperMom’s brand primarily to SuperAmerica branded retail outlets.

Western Refining Inc., an independent refining and marketing company based in El Paso, Texas, operates refineries in El Paso, Gallup, N.M., and St. Paul Park, Minn. The company's retail operations include gas stations and convenience stores in Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico, Texas and Wisconsin, operating primarily through the Giant, Howdy's and SuperAmerica brands.

San Antonio-based Tesoro Corp. and Western Refining have announced a definitive agreement under which Tesoro will acquire Western Refining.
