The J.M. Smucker Co. sold its Sahale Snacks brand—which makes nut and fruit snack mixes—to Second Nature Brands, a Detroit-based better-for-you snacks and treats manufacturer.

The sale comes closely after Orville, Ohio-based Smucker’s acquired Hostess Brands. The acquisition included Hostess Brands sweet baked goods brands, a distribution facility in Edgerton, Kansas, and approximately 3,000 employees.

“This divestiture reflects our continued commitment to portfolio and resource optimization to sharpen our focus and support continued growth,” said Mark Smucker, chair of the board, president and CEO of The J.M. Smucker Co. “The divestiture of the Sahale Snacks brand will support continued growth in our Consumer Foods business with enhanced investment in our Smucker's Uncrustables brand and building on our leadership in spreads. As always, any decision that impacts our employees is only made after careful consideration and I want to thank all who have supported this brand, which has played an important role in our consumer foods portfolio.”

The approximately $34 million all-cash transaction, subject to a working capital adjustment, will include all trademarks and the company's leased manufacturing facility in Seattle, including about 100 employees who will transition with the business. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of the company's current fiscal year ending April 30, 2024.

Second Nature Brands owns a growing portfolio of brands, including Kar's Nuts, Second Nature Snacks, Brownie Brittle and Sanders kettle-cooked sea salt caramels.

The acquisition of Sahale Snacks follows Second Nature Brands' purchase of Brownie Brittle in December 2022 and forms part of the company's plans to accelerate the growth of the business and position Second Nature Brands as a U.S. leader in snacks and treats, the company said.

“Sahale Snacks adds a fantastic super-premium product to our range, considerably broadens our snack mix and nut portfolio and unlocks significant new opportunities for us to help grow the category, which we are very excited about,” said Victor Mehren, CEO of Second Nature Brands. “On completion, we look forward to welcoming 100 new colleagues to the Second Nature Brands team and see significant opportunity to build on their success to date to drive innovation, brand penetration and growth.”

Orrville, Ohio-based Smucker offer consumer products in the coffee, consumer foods, dog snacks and cat food categories under brands including Folgers, Dunkin’, Café Bustelo, Jif, Smucker’s Uncrustables, Smucker’s, Milk-Bone and Meow Mix.

Second Nature Brands, Detroit, is a better-for-you snacks and treats maker, offering brands such as Kar’s Nuts, Second Nature Snacks and Sanders Chocolates.
