Cumby Farms Launches Youth Program

Retailer offering scholarships, 4-H funding

CANTON, Mass. -- Reflecting its commitment to make a difference in the lives of young people in the communities it serves, Cumberland Farms has launched a Corporate Giving Program for Youth.

At an event at the Boston Public Library, Cumberland Farms CEO Lily Bentas announced two gifts to inaugurate the program. The first will provide need-based college scholarships to 100 high school students across its 11 state service area. Second, Cumberland Farms is funding a 4-H Youth in Action Grants Program to benefit 5,000 youth and 1,500 adult volunteers at 50 [image-nocss] local 4-H clubs and 4-H afterschool sites across its service region.

She spoke at the site of Patches the Cow, an art installation the company sponsored as part of Boston's "Cow Parade" fundraiser that benefits Jimmy Fund/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The company selected "Patches" for its motto: Children are the fabric of a community.

"Cumberland Farms recognizes that our youth are our most precious resource," Bentas said. "We are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young people. We want our corporate giving program to be a vehicle that supports and improves the circumstances for the next generation."

Three key missions underpin the Cumberland Farms Corporate Giving Program for Youth: to improve the prospects for young people, to encourage and support young people's achievements in business and leadership and to provide educational opportunities for young people in the communities Cumberland Farms serves.

The 4-H Youth in Action Grants Program will award mini-grants to local 4-H clubs or afterschool sites to implement a service-learning project. More than just community service, Youth in Action grants are opportunities for young people to learn leadership, citizenship and life skills while benefiting the communities in which they live.

The Cumberland Farms scholarship program will be administered through Scholarship America, and award students on both academic merit and financial need.

Through its Corporate Giving Program for Youth, the company is working to improve the prospects for young people, to encourage and support young people's achievements in business and leadership, and to provide educational opportunities for young people, it said. Cumberland Farms is a proud sponsor of 4-H America, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Making Strides for Breast Cancer and provides college scholarships. In addition to annual corporate contributions, Cumberland Farms is active at the local level, building awareness and supporting worthy organizations in the communities where we live and work.

Canton, Mass.-based Cumberland Farms' network of retail stores, gas stations and petroleum, dairy and grocery distribution operations spans 11 states across the Northeast and Florida.
