Must-See Innovation in Bottled Water

As consumption grows, so do the varieties of flavors and enhancements

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. -- Bottled-water innovation got a close-up in a recent issue of Convenience Store Products' e-newsletter.

In a slideshow highlighting eight innovative new bottled waters, the sister publication of CSP Daily News pointed out that bottled-water consumption grew 120% from 2000 to 2015, a rapid rise that coincided with a 16% sales spiral for carbonated beverages, according to a report from New York-based Beverage Marketing Corp.

Beverage Marketing expects consumers to be drinking more water than soda by early 2017, if not by the end of this year. To capitalize, flavored and enhanced bottled waters are becoming more sophisticated and complex, not to mention additionally premium and artisan, all part of a “craft water” innovation movement, according to the report. This is motivated by consumers searching for ultrapure water sources, according to a 2016 report from Chicago-based Mintel International, which examined the bottled-water category.
