CINCINNATI -- Pierre Foods Inc. said late last week that it is recalling two kinds of packaged chicken sandwiches because the bread contains a milk ingredient that could cause a life-threatening allergic reaction.
According to an Associated Press report, the company has notified the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), but voluntarily began the recall of its Fast Bites Spicy Breaded Chicken and Fast Bites BBQ Chicken sandwiches, said James Hall, the company's technical services director.
Hall said Pierre Foods decided to recall [image-nocss] the products after it discovered that the bun portion of the sandwiches contains the milk protein, micro gold, that is not listed on the packaging. While the ingredient may cause an allergic reaction in people who have allergies or sensitivity to milk, no illnesses have been reported, he said.
The two sandwiches are distributed nationwide and can be purchased from convenience stores and vending machines. The products are packaged in clear film and contain two sandwiches per package.
The Fast Bites BBQ Chicken sandwiches are marked with a barcode of 7142110953, while the barcode on the Fast Bites Spicy Breaded Chicken sandwiches is 7142110954.
