Kwik Trip Opens 'New Footprint' Store

Retailer "in extremely aggressive growth mode"

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Kwik Trip Inc. has opened a new, $1.1 million convenience store in Mayville, Wis.

Larry Janisewski, district leader for Kwik Trip in southcentral Wisconsin, told The Beaver Dam Daily Citizen that the location will feature weekly dairy, food and beverage specials as well as coupons and prize drawings through February 6. A grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday, said the report.

"We're very excited about a second store in Mayville," Janisewski added. "This has been a tremendous opportunity."

He said the bright and spacious [image-nocss] interior design resembles the "new footprint" for Kwik Trip. It is nearly twice the size of the 2,000-square-foot, cramped downtown store and easier to navigate. "We want people to walk away with a feeling that we're here to serve them," he told the newspaper.

Hans Zietlow, real estate director for La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip, described the new site as a more high-end c-store with an upscale coffee bar and an expanded offering of hot food. "Probably the shining star of that is the pizza that we make right there in our store," he told the paper.

Its Fresh Case contains salads, fruits, sandwiches and yogurt, the report said.

"We want food to be a destination for people coming to Kwik Trip," Janisewski said. "That's something that sets us apart from the competition."

The new store also features six fueling stations and about 20 parking stalls. Plans include adding more parking and possibly one more fueling station this summer. "Unfortunately, there's no diesel or E85 fuel at this site because there's no tank storage space for that," Janisewski said.

Last November, Kwik Trip purchased the former Mayville CITGO Station and Buddy's Frozen Custard and immediately began remodeling, said the report. The firm also bought a house next door to the property. "We'll have Mayville covered for quite some time," Zietlow said.

Kwik Trip has about 350 locations throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, including sites that recently opened in Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh and Sheboygan.

"The future looks pretty bright," Zietlow said. "We're in an extremely aggressive growth mode right now."

He said the nearly $4 million, 5,000-sq.-ft. Kwik Trip in Beaver Dam, Wis., that opened last fall with a double bay touchless car wash serves as an example of the stores the company builds from the ground up. "We're always looking at any community in the state that's 5,000 [people] or larger," Zietlow said.

Kwik Trip maintains total quality control over a variety of products by manufacturing and packaging those items in its own facilities, the report said. "So we have fresher products that were made right here in Wisconsin and delivered fresh everyday," Zietlow said.

That includes the Glazer Donuts that Gary Gonczy, director of marketing and advertising for Kwik Trip described as a "knockoff" of Krispy Kremes, "only better."

He told the paper, "They're the best glazed donuts in the world. At least that's our opinion."
