More Amazon Go Stores Coming This Year: Report

Company said to be in ‘serious’ talks with shopping center developer

SEATTLE -- Amazon plans to open as many as six more Amazon Go brick-and-mortar cashierless convenience stores this year, according to a Recode report.

Some of the new stores are likely to open in Amazon’s hometown of Seattle, where the first location is based, as well as Los Angeles, multiple people familiar with the company’s plans told the technology news outlet.

“We don’t comment on rumors or speculation,” an Amazon spokesperson told CSP Daily News when asked to confirm the report.

In Los Angeles, Amazon has held “serious” talks with billionaire developer Rick Caruso about bringing an Amazon Go store to The Grove, his 600,000-square-foot outdoor shopping development, two of the sources told Recode.

And in Seattle, Amazon had identified at least three locations for additional Go stores as of last year, one source said.

The sole Amazon Go c-store opened in Seattle in late January after a year of testing and tweaking to fix glitches. The store uses “just walk out” technology that automatically detects when a customer takes or returns products to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart on their mobile phone. When the customer is done shopping, he or she can leave the store and Amazon charges the customer’s Amazon account and sends a receipt.
