Rutter's Renovations, Rollouts

Several sites slated for upgrades; more stores coming for regional retailer

YORK, Pa. -- Add Rutter's Farm Stores to the list of major regional convenience store companies currently experiencing growth spurts. It joins Kum & Go, QuikTrip, Delek US, Douglass Distributing and other chains that have recently announced expansion or the intention to grow. Rutter's has several renovations and new-builds in the pipeline.

Rutter 's closed a store in its hometown of York, Pa., on Monday to make way for a new building that will be twice as big. It will raze the existing building and replace it with a 5,200-square-foot store that will offer the company 's latest foodservice [image-nocss] offerings, a self-serve premium-coffee island, seating and a newly introduced bathroom design featuring tiled walls, floating ceilings, music and other upscale amenities.

Plans also call for a single-bay automatic car wash and 16 fueling positions for gasoline customers. The new store is expected to reopen by the end of July.

Rutter 's is in the midst of the most ambitious growth plans in its 40-year history, it said. The company will invest more than $55 million this year to build 10 stores and 11 car washes, which will add 350 new jobs—and more than $4.5 million in annual wages and benefits—to the area economy.

Also this month, the company said it expects renovation and expansion of an existing store in East Berlin, Pa., to be completed, with the reopening tentatively scheduled for April 25.

Renovation of another store in York, also with the addition of a car wash, is expected to be completed in May. The store has remained open throughout the project, which includes upgrades to the foodservice area and restrooms.

Construction of a new store in Springettsbury Township is continuing. The retailer said it expects the work to be completed in the spring.

Rutters said it expects construction of a new store and car wash in York Township, Pa., to begin this month, with the company targeting a summer opening.

And it said it expects renovation of a store in Dillsburg, Pa., to begin at the end of April and to be completed within one month. The store will remain open while upgrades are made to the foodservice area, restrooms and exterior canopy.

Family-owned and third-generation managed, Rutter 's Farm Stores operates 51 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania.
