Tedeschi Scores Six Munce's Konvenience Stores

And Coulson Oil moving back into c-store realm

ROCKLAND, Mass. -- Tedeschi Food Shops Inc. has acquired six Munce's Konvenience stores in central New Hampshire. The retailer has renovated and is operating two of the stores--one in Warren and one in Plymouth, adjacent to Plymouth State College. A second Plymouth location will open in mid-February once the interior update has been completed, the company said.

"All six of the acquired Munce's stores are currently just operated by Tedeschi Food Shops--we do now own them yet," Tedeschi spokesperson Erin McGarry told CSP Daily News.

The other stores that Tedeschi s is operating are located in New Hampton, Tamworth and Lincoln, he said.

Tedeschi is updating all six of the locations, making their interiors brighter and more conducive to shopping, the company said. In addition to a wide variety of beverages, snacks and groceries, these stores now feature an extensive selection of vibrant salads, freshly made sandwiches, hearty subs, healthy wraps and wholesome snacks that are prepared by Tedeschi Fresh Foods, the company's proprietary commissary. Freshly brewed hot and iced coffee is also available.

As reported in a Morgan Keegan/CSP Daily News Flash yesterday, Munce's Superior Petroleum Products, is based in Gorham, N.H. It is a family-owned and -operated business that has served northern New England for more than 40 years. Munce's began as a garage, gas station and fuel company and has grown to include 11 Munce's Konvenience Stores and truckstops, Munce's home heating fuel and service, Munce's Propane delivery and service, Munce's Lubricants, wholesale fuel and gasoline and Beaver Trails Campground & RV Park.

Established in 1923, Tedeschi Food Shops, based in Rockland, Mass., is a family-owned and -operated convenience store chain with more than $600 million in annual revenue. The company operates 190 convenience store locations throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Tedeschi Food Shops provide its customers with a family of proprietary brands: TD's Deli and Tedeschi Fresh Foods, Tedeschi Select and Tedeschi Fuel.

Separately, after years of supplying gasoline, North Little Rock, Ark.-based Coulson Oil Co. is moving back into c-stores. Coulson Oil has purchased two c-stores in the Texarkana area, reported Arkansas Business Online. And it intends to purchase more.

In recent years, the company primarily sold fuel to around 230 outlets around the state, mostly Shell stations. Coulson president and CEO David Zakrzewski told the newspaper that the acquisitions represented a new direction for the company.

"We own several hundred pieces of real estate," Coulson CFO Lance West told the paper. "We usually lease those properties to independent operators and have a partnership. We're going to get back into the realm of operating whole locations for ourselves."

In the past, Coulson was on the forefront of Arkansas c-store design, said the report, pioneering elements such as self-service gasoline, truckstops and shops combined with fast-food restaurants.

In August, Coulson Oil formed Coulson Real Estate Group LLC to acquire and develop real-estate holdings (see Related Content below for previous CSP Daily Newscoverage). At the time, it said opening new stores was a possibility the group might explore.
